Biography

Martha Lamson was born in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 25 Dec 1711, the daughter of Ebenezer Lamson and Sarah Hartwell.[1] On 11 Jul 1732, at age twenty, she married Israel Conant in Concord.[2] On 11 Jul 1732, at age twenty, she married Israel Conant in Concord.[3] On 3 Feb 1733, a week shy of nine months after their wedding, she gave birth to a son, Jonathan, in Concord.[4] In about 1735, likely in Acton (which had been formed from part of Concord in 1735), Martha gave birth to a daughter, Mary ("Molly").[5] She also had a son, named Israel, but the date and place of that son's birth are unknown.[6]

As for her husband, Israel's employment, he was, at least for part of his life, a "scythe maker."[6] He was also, at times, a person of means, as evidenced by his property holdings:

On Mch. 13, 1732, he buys a house and lot of his brother, Ebenezer, for which he paid £112, and on Mch. 8, 1736, Roger Conant [his father] deeds 4 acres of meadow to 'my son Israel' (Middlesex Deeds). In 1732 he is mentioned as one of the proprietors of Walpole, N.H., and on 29 Dec., 1736, drew lot No. 20 "on ye plain" (New Hampshire Town Papers). On 6 May 1743, he sells land in Canterbury, N.H., to Robert Pope, of Boston, for £20 (Rockingham Co. Deeds, Vol. 26, p. 479). [On] July 4, 1747, he and his wife, Martha, relinquish all rights in the estate of her father, Ebenezer Lamson, of Concord, for a payment of £150. [On] Jan. 5, 1749, he sells a house and lot "in the southerly part of the town," to Dr. Joseph Lee, for £512 (Middlesex Co. Deeds).[6]

But it did not go well for Israel, financially, anyway, because he died in 1753, at age 46 and only four years after selling the last house, "intestate and insolvent."[6] "The papers relating to the settlement of his estate mention several small children, but not by name."[6]

Profile Manager: Because Israel and Martha were not married until July 1732, it’s assuredly the case, given conventions of the time, that Jonathan was born in 1733, not 1732, and in Concord, not Acton, because Acton was not formed from Concord until 1735.
