Biography

John Lancaster was born about 1694, in New Kent County, Virginia (the Lancaster yDNA Project supports this location). He died after February 1769, when he deeded 100 acres of land on Deep Run Creek in Henrico County, Virginia, along with "houses, orchards, garden, fences, woods, waters and advantage with five Negroes..."

11 Sep 1739: At the Vestry meeting held for St. Paul's Parish the Eleventh day of September 1739, "Ordered into one precinct for processioning the Lands of George Vaughn, the Widdow [spelling in original] Frazer, John JOYNER, Benj ALSOP, Martin BAKER, William THACKER, John RAGLAND, Anthony WINSTON's orphans, Anthony WADDY, Chas. LEWIS Rich'd HARRIS, Barbara [OVERTON] Winston, John BACON, Richard HARRIS' Orphans, and that George VAUGHN and William THACKER do see the said processioning performed, who made the following return, According to the within order, the Lands hath been peaceably processioned in the presence of the proprietors, & & us the Subscribers. March 1739. Test: Matthew PATE, Thos BAKER." [1]

1742: Deeds registered in Henrico County, Virginia: Martha Patterson and Thomas Cottrell each sold land to John Lancaster.

5 March 1747: John Jones sold land to William Jones. Land was bounded by that of John Lankestor.

14 October 1748: John Lancaster was witness to a land sale, Charles Witt of Goochland County to David Staples of Henrico County. John Lancaster's mark appears as three vertical lines with a slash across them (perhaps represented IV?).

3 April 1750: John Lancaster was witness to a Deed of Record between Jane Rudolph and her son, Robert Rudolph.

October 1750: A Deed of Record in Henrico County mentions "at John Lancaster line on a branch called the Old House Branch thence to said branch according to the course of John Williamson's line.."

17 August 1751: Church records from St. John's Parish, John Lancaster is among those appointed to "renew the bounds of Precinct 1, processing lands, to name all persons in Precinct of Curls Church from the mouth of the Great West Ham to William Gordon's Road to the James River.." [2][3]

16 May 1755: John Lancaster placed an advertisement in the Virginia Gazette: "Strayed or stolen from the subscriber, living in Henrioco County, a black mare, about four feet, five inches high, or better, with a small White spot on her face, and another on one of her thighs just above her ham, a split in the back part of one of her ears, and branded on the near shoulder somewhat resembling a fishhook: She was with foal when she went astray. Whoever will bring the mare and colt to me, shall have a pistol reward. Paid by John Lancaster."

5 Sep 1757: John LANCASTER sold 180 acres for 50 pounds to his son, Nathaniel LANKESTER, described as on the south side of Deep Run Creek, adjoining John North and John LANCASTER's line to Richard Cottrell and John EELS to William JONES. Witnessed: Christopher John thomas, John Lankester and Francis [x] Lankester. [4]

4 July 1763: Record in Henrico County by executors of the estate of Michael Holland, sale of 587 acres adjoining John Lancaster.

3 October 1763: John North and Sarah his wife sold, for 30 pounds, 100 acres adjoining John Lancaster, Anthony North, Old House Branch, Thomas North, Thomas Randolph, David Allen, and William Jones. This should help pinpoint a location.

February 1769: He deeded 100 acres of land on Deep Run Creek in Henrico County, Virginia, along with "houses, orchards, garden, fences, woods, waters and advantage with five Negroes..."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Lancaster-1462 and Lancaster-522 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, no conflicting information

Why are we not Merging the two John Lancaster’s.it sure seems to me he is the same person , but has a middle initial. Mary Gill Dykes, my 4th GG.thru William Allen La ncaster. And my mother Kate Lancaster Gill.
Lancaster-522 and Lancaster-885 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person with some duplicate children if you look at the decendants list for John Gowan. This has been pending , I think of the wife’s name , not John W.was she Mary, Frances or Mary Frances ? He is my 4th great grandfather.

Lancaster-885 and Lancaster-522 are not ready to be merged because: This is the first I heard of this set of parents for John Lancaster. I need some time to absorb this information.

Hello, Umpteenth Cousin!

I found a birthdate of 1694 in London, but do not believe it to be the same John Lancaster. It could be, and that would be nice! But yDNA evidence seems to place his origins in New Kent County, Virginia. I do not doubt he was related to the London bunch. I have that he died 1770 in Varina Parish, Henrico, Virginia. Right now, I could not tell you where I got that - it would involve digging into the files that I proudly refer to as my "avalanche". Please write to [email address removed] (the address I use for this line), and I will dig out notes for comparison. Thanks for the note! Pj

I have in my record a specific birth year of 1694 and death of 1776. I cannot say exactly where I got the dates from. Morton Lancaster, 6th great-grandson.
