By 1783 John and his family had moved to Surry County, North Carolina. He purchased several parcels of land there and was involved in several lawsuits in one of these he represented by young attorney named Andrew Jackson. He acquired large land holdings, some of which obtained by buying up government land warrants from the widows of revolutionary war soldiers. Sometime before 1790 John jr. and his family moved to Davidson county Tennessee, where John bought 2,560 Acres on the Caney fork, a tributary of the Cumberland river. This land is now a part of Smith county Tennessee. His land speculations made John a wealthy man. Included among his possessions was a grist mill on Caney Fork creek. John and his sons founded the town of Lancaster,Tennessee; Sources Mormon site & Smith county,Tennessee History. The Bible record of John jr. and his wife Ann Lancaster is preserved in the National Archives as part of a pension application and gives the names and dates of birth of their eleven children. [1]
Some say he was born in England, but other records indicate the birth was in Henrico County, Virginia. He was married to Ann Cottrell about 1753, and moved to Smith County, Tennessee in about 1787. They raised twelve children that I know of.
