Biography

Birth

Date of birth is a rough estimate based on marriage date. Previously, a date of birth, 24 MAR 1597, in Broughton, Hampshire, England, was listed on this profile but without a source (other than a link to an unsourced Rootsweb & Ancestry trees).[1] To date, a birth record for William has not been identified.

In the marriage bans of his daughter Prudence, William is listed as "William Lanckford of Broughton." However, no record for William can be found in Broughton. It is possible that he was born elsewhere and only was living in Broughton at the time of marriage.[2]

Marriage

There is a record of a marriage of William Lanckford "of Southwick" to Elizabeth Reading on 12 June 1622. Elizabeth is mentioned as a "spinster, of Wymering." While it cannot be proven that this record is correct for this profile, it is the closest match that has been found. Hunt mentions that Wymering Parish is about 9 miles east of Chichester.[3]

Religion and Faith

George Fox, the creator of the Quaker faith, came to Chichester in 1655. William's daughter Prudence, and son-in-law William Clayton were followers of Fox and members of the Quaker religion.[3] Considering that William was mentioned in the monthly meeting minutes for Chichester and Lewes, there is a good possibility that William was also a Quaker.

Death and Legacy

A record referencing William's death shows a burial dated on the 2nd of January 1665. This would suggest a death a few days earlier. The burial record is in the "England and Wales Non-Conformist records."[4] A burial outside of the state church is consistent with what we know about this family: specifically, that they were Quakers. The record shows a burial at Chichester, the same place where William's daughter Prudence and her husband William Clayton were living - they were married in Chichester on 7 November 1653. Additionally, the Chichester & Lewes Monthly Meeting minutes record the death of a William Lanckford on 1 January 1665/1666. The births of William's grandchildren (to parents William and Prudence Clayton) were recorded in the same MM through the 1660's.[3]
