Biography

MATHURIN LANDRY is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 4 Right. Listed with him is his wife, Marie Babin, and two children, Marie and Marcel.[1]

Marie Louise Divine "Ludivine" Landry was born about 1762 in Port Tobacco, Colony of Maryland. Her parents were Acadian exiles Mathurin Landry and Marie Babin. On 7 July 1763, the family of three was enumerated in Port Tobacco, Maryland. They were on a list titled "State of the Neutral Acadians Who Are at Portabaco in Maryland."[2]

At the end of the war, the Acadians were given permission to leave Port Tobacco, and many decided to settle in Louisiana. Once in New Orleans, the Spanish government of Louisiana gave them provisions and arranged to send the family to Natchez, Mississippi. Maturin, his wife, two children and an orphan were on a list dated 11 Feb 1768 at New Orleans: "Distribution of Lands for the Acadian Families Who Are Destined for the Town of Saint Louis of Natchez." [4]

The family didn't remain in Natchez and were subsequently resettled in St. Gabriel, Louisiana. They are on a census there dated 6 March 1777.[5]
