George "Big Chief Jolly" Landry was the founder of "The Wild Tchoupitoulas", a group of Mardi Gras Indians formed in the early 1970s. Landry, with his mixed African-American, Caucasian, and Native American (Choctaw) heritage, had been an active performer in the Mardi Gras Indian styling for a number of years.
According to his marriage record, his father was William Landry and his mother was Mary Melancon.
