Biography

RENE LANDRY is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 12 Left, La Ville d'Arcangel arrivee 3 Decembre 1785. Listed with Rene are eight children: Marie, Servanne, Jean Raphael, Marguerite, Anne, Pierre, Joseph, Jeanne, and his beau frere (brother-in-law), Paul Babin. [1]

René Landry, son of Antoine Landry and Marie Melanson, was born on 8 August 1830 and baptized on 13 August 1730 in Grand-Pré, Acadie. His sponsors were René Landry & Izabel Darouet.[2]

On 5 September 1755, René and his brother Antoine were imprisoned along with hundreds of other Acadian men at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand Pré. On a list of prisoners, he was said to live in the village Landry. No children or livestock were listed for him. He was 25 years of age at the time, and not married. He was required to prepare for deportation within 30 days. [3][4]

On 20 December 1755, René, his parents, and his brother Antoine were deported aboard the Ranger. The 112 deported Acadians were held over winter in Virginia on 20 January 1756. In May 1756, on the Bobby Goodridge, they were deported again, from Virginia to Portsmouth, England where they arrived on 23 June 1756. From there they were sent to Southampton, England where his parents died that same year.[4] René and Antoine spent the duration of the Seven Years War detained in England.

He married Marguerite Babin, daughter of Jean Babin and Marguerite Thériot, around 1759 in England.[4]

After the 1763 Treaty of Paris, the Acadians were released, and those in England were identified and turned over to France. Rene, his wife and oldest daughter disembarked at St. Malo from England on 23 May 1763 from the ship La Dorothee. They resided at St. Servan from 1763-1772.[6][7]

They had at least eight children before his wife died in France. By 1785 he had decided to take his children and start fresh in Spanish-ruled Louisiana, which had become a haven for displaced Acadians.

He and his eight children arrived on 3 December 1785 at the port of New Orleans, Louisiana.[8]

He died before 6 July 1801 in Louisiana. [citation needed]
