Damase was born in 1836, the son of Joseph Landry and Archange Gueret dite Dumont. His mother died when he was 14, and his father remarried 2 years later in 1852. Damas married at age 27 to Henriette Michaud, a woman 6 years his senior, and of his 4 children, two of his daughters, ages 6 and 12, died within 3 weeks of each other. Damase passed away in 1913 at 76 years old, 2 years after his wife.
