Biography

Sarah Lane was born about December 2, 1770, the daughter of Benjamin and Hannah Lane.

Alden Bridgham married Sarah Lane on February 17, 1791. He was born in Plympton, Massachusetts on May 27, 1768, the ninth of eleven children. He was the first of eight Bridghams over time to be named “Alden.”

They lived in Pejipscot, Massachusetts (later Maine) in 1880, in Minot in1810, and in Bangor, Maine in 1830 and 1840.

On February 23, 1805, Alden Bridgham and William Bridgham, along with 47 other citizens and their families, incorporated as “The First Universalist Society of Christians in New-Gloucester.”

In 1808, Sarah (also known as “Sally”) Bridgham’s father, Ebenezer Lane, conveyed a large piece of land “in consideration of the natural love and affection I have unto my beloved Daughter Sally Bridgham and divers of good causes.” In turn, Ebenezer “leased this property for life” from his son-in-law for 10 cents a year.

In the 1810 census, Alden Bridgham of Minot, Maine, was head of a household that included 3 males under 10 (George was not yet born, William was 3, Alden Jr. was 5), 1 male 26 thru 44 (Alden was 42), 2 females under 10 (____, Betsy was 8), 2 females 10 thru 15 (Anna was 11, Joanna was 13), 1 female 16 thru 25 (Mary was 16), and 1 female 26 thru 44 (Sarah was 40). Sally was married in 1813, and presumably was with her husband. All the children are accounted for. Who are the young boy and girl?

On January 20, 1813, an estate in Pejipscot “commonly known by the name of the Alden Bridgham Place, containing a two-story dwelling house, a good barn and fifty acres of excellent land” and mortgaged to the Cumberland Bank went into public auction. Nathaniel Ingersol had “all the right in equity of redemption.”

Alden Bridgham died July 18, 1853 and the age of 85 and is buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid, Maine.

“Lane Genealogies” describes the control of property,

Ebenezer Lane paid Elkanah Lucas, £21, 7 shillings, 8 pence, Feb. 8, 1782, for 13 1-2 acres of unimproved land, the 60 acre lot No. 10, Division 2, in New Gloucester. He paid Joel Haskell $400 for the remainder of the lot, Oct. 30, 1799. He conveyed it to his son, William Lane, Ape. 31, 1804, and after William’s death, to his daughter, Sally, Jan. 14, 1808, “in consideration of the natural love and affection I have unto my beloved Daughter Sally Bridgham and divers other good causes.” He leased this property for life from Alden and Sally Bridgham paying them 10 cents annually, June 14, 1808, and bought it again of Joseph E. Foxcroft, Esq., for $535, Dec. 26, 1814.
Ebenezer Lane of New Gloucester, paid Edward Pool of Gloucester, £46, 4 shillings, 6 pence, May 10, 1793, for 50 acres of land in the Co. of Cumberland, part of the 8th division, above Pownaldborough on the Pejepscot claim. Ebenezer Lane, innholder, sold this land to Alden Bridgham for £50, Nov. 29, 1797.

We do not know when Sarah (Lane) Bridgham died. Her last child was born in 1812 when she was 42. She appears to be counted in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses, but that’s just conjecture.

Research Notes

Sarah is also listed as Sally in "Lane Genealogies, Vol III", [9]

The 1810 Maine census shows the Alden Bridgham family living in Minot, Maine. Living with this family was a woman aged between 26 and 45. So either Sarah lived beyond 1810, or Alden remarried, or another woman lived with the family. I am assuming this is Sarah.

From "Lane Genealogies,", p. 3.219,

"Ebenezer Lane paid Elkanah Lucas, 21 pounds, 7 shillings, 8 pence, Feb. 31, 1804, and after William's death, to his daughter, Sally, Jan. 14, 1808, 'in consideration of the natural love and affection I have unto my beloved Daughter Sally Bridgham and divers other good causes.' He leased this property for life from Alden and Sally Bridgham paying them 10 cents annually, June 14, 1808, and bought it again of Joseph E. Foxcroft, Esq., for $535, Dec. 26, 1814."

From "Lane Genealogies,", p. 3.220,

"Ebenezer Lane of New Gloucester, paid Edward Pool of Gloucester, 46 pounds, 4 shillings, 6 pence, May 10, 1793, for 50 acres of land in the Co. of Cumberland, part of the 8th division, above Pownaldborough on the Pejepscot claim. Ebenezer Lane, innholder, sold this land to Alden Bridgham for 50 pounds, Nov. 29, 1797."

From "Lane Genealogies,", p. 3.222,

"Sarah, bap. 2 Dec., 1770, m. Alden Bridgcome [sic]."
