Biography

1564 Birth

John Lane was the son of Thomas Lane of Bentley, and Katherine, daughter of Richard Trentham, according to Wrottesley (1910) and HM Lane (1910).[1][2]

Burke (1835) indicates that John Lane was the son of Francis Lane and Catherine, daughter of Richard Trentham. [3]

Note that the name of his father is listed as Francis or Thomas in different trees, but appears to be the same person. See discussion in his father's profile.

John Lane was born about 1564, according to the inquisition taken after his father's death where John was identified as of age "24 years or more" (p.171).[1] (About 1565 according to HM Lane (2010).[2])

It is assumed that he was born in Bentley Hall, Staffordshire, England, as that was the manor of his family.

Marriage

He married Jane Littleton, daughter of Sir Edward Littleton.[2][3][4] Also, Jane Lyttleton is identified as his wife in John's post-mortem inquisition into his estate.(p.173)[1]

A source for the year of marriage has not been identified, but he was identified with wife Jane in 1591 in legal documents, so was married before then (p.171).[1]

Civil Records

John Lane is noted as party to a fine in 1591, and with his wife Jane as party in another fine in 1591.(p.171)[1]

In 1592 he is recorded as selling land in Hatton and Brewood.(p.171)[1]

In 1593, also with wife Jane, he levied a fine with respecting use of his lands.(p.171)[1]

In 1596, with wife Jane, he sold land in Gunston, Chillington, Codsall, Bilbrooke and Brewood.(p.171)[1]

Children

Their children included:

  • Thomas, son and heir, born 1585.[1][2][3][4]
  • Alice [or Alicia], who married Alexander Wightwick.[2][3][4]
  • Margaret, who died unmarried.[4]
  • Two other sons who lived at Court and died unmarried.[4] These may have included a son John, as in the latter part of his life John the father was referred to as "John Lane the elder."[1]

1605 Death

John Lane died on 25 June 1605.(p.172, 174)[1][2][4]
