Biography

Birth and Parents

John Lane of Bentley was the son of Richard Lane, who married in the 15th Henry VII (1500) Anne, daughter of John Harcourt of Raunton.[1][2]

He was born about 1511/1512, as he is listed in his father's estate post-mortem inquisition in 1516 as "John Lane is son and next heir of the said Richard and of the age of five years and upwards."[3][2]

He is assumed to have been born in the family estate in Bentley, Staffordshire, England.

Notes

As John was a child when his father died, his wardship was granted to Thomas Parteriche.(p.163)[3]

He would have come of age about 1533, but it was 1536 when he received his family holdings ("livery of seisen").(p.163)[3]

In 1539, John Layne Esquyer was identified in the General Muster as prepared to supply horse and harness for two men. He was likely resident at The Hyde at this time.(p.164)[3]

Marriage

Burke (1835) indicates that John Lane of Bentley married Catherine daughter of Thomas Patrick, of King’s Bromley.[1]

Wrottesley (1910) indicates that John married Catharine, the daughter of Thomas Partrick his guardian.[3]

Lane (1910) indicates that he married Margaret Patrich, daughter of Thomas Patrich of King's Bromley by his first wife Alice Praers.[2]

This appears to be the same lady, but with some uncertainty whether her first name was Catherine or Margaret.

The date of marriage is not certain, but was likely about 1530-1531 as his son Thomas was born about 1531. He would have been about 19 years old. It is assumed to have taken place in King's Bromley, the home of his wife, and also his guardian Thomas Partick.

Children

Burke (1835) states that John Lane of Bentley was succeeded by his son Francis, who married Catherine, daughter of Richard Trentham, Esq.[1]

Wrottesley (1910) indicates his issue included Thomas, Richard and John.(p.164)[3]

Lane (1910) indicates that according to the monument for John Lane in Brewood where he was buried, he had eight sons and nine daughters. The eldest son and heir was Thomas Lane, who married Catherine Trentham, daughter of Richard Trentham of Rocester, Staffordshire. The second and third sons were Richard and John. One of the daughters was Elizabeth.[2]

Note that these sources differ in the name of his eldest son and heir - Francis or Thomas - although it is the same person who married Catherine Trentham. This may be the source of confusion in various family trees. It is possible that the same record was used by both sources, but a different name was inferred - Francis and Thomas could appear similar in handwritten form.

Death

John Lane of Bentley died in the 19th Elizabeth (1576-1577) according to Burke,[1] and specifically 17 Nov 1576 according to Wrottesley and Lane.[3][2] He was buried at Brewood.[2] The post-mortem inquisition into his estate was held on 4 Feb 1577.(p.164)[3]

Lane-4305 and Lane-1176 appear to represent the same person because: Same vitals. same spouse (with spelling variation, but same woman; she'll also need merging)
