Biography

Mary was born in 1817. She passed away in 1917.

John and Mary came to Victoria in January 1850.

Euroa Advertiser (Vic.: 1884 - 1920), Friday 24 November 1916. [1] AT THE DOOR OF THE CENTURY. Mrs. De Boos, senior, Euroa. Tomorrow (25th November) Mrs. De Boos, senior, of Euroa, will celebrate her 99th birthday.  The old lady is now in feeble health, but betrays much interest in the passing events of the day, and insists on keeping in touch with the progress of the war.  The residents of Euroa and district unite in wishing her Many happy Returns of the Day.  Her late husband, Mr. John De Boos, was on the "Argus" staff in 1851, and was sent up to Anderson's Creek to report on the first gold discovery.  Mrs. De Boos went with her husband and a party of Melbourne residents among whom was the late Mr. Benjamin Lee, ironmonger, of Bourke Street, to the Forest Creek rush, where the party did very well, but on account of the bad water and sickness they soon returned to Melbourne. Mr. De Boos then entered into a small store business in Lonsdale Street, but as his rent was gradually increased from 30s to £4 per week, he decided to go to the country, and first bought an allotment Euroa, on the road to the Ovens diggings, to which a great rush was then on.  He opened a store in a large tent in February 1853, and afterwards in a slab and bark building.  On coming to the colony (1850) Mr. De Boos took a situation as Shepherd on a station at Fiery Creek, near that is now Streatham, Mrs. De Boos acting as hut keeper, the salary being £30 per year and rations.  Mr C. L. DeBoos remembers as a little boy the tribes of blacks and the lubras helping his mother with the washing.  The natives were very fond of, and kind to the children.

The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.: 1848 - 1956), Monday 29 January 1917. [2] DE BOOS. - On the 27th January, at Euroa, Mary, relict of late John de Boos, mother of Mrs. M. A. Stewart and Charles Lane De Boos, aged 99 years.   Euroa Advertiser (Vic.: 1884 - 1920), Friday 2 February 1917. [3] DEATH OF MRS. De BOOS SENR. FOUR GENERATIONS. THE above photograph shows four generations in the family of the late Mrs. De Boos, Senr., whose death we regret to record this week.  The picture shows the old lady herself (taken on her 98th birthday), her daughter (Mrs. Stewart), the latter's son, and his daughter. The serious illness of Mrs. De Boos, Senr., chronicled in our last issue, terminated fatally about midday on Saturday last.  Her death removes the last of the early pioneers of Euroa, though there remain still in the district a small band who were little children at the date of the late Mrs. De Boos taking up her residence in Euroa.  The deceased lady and her husband came to Euroa district in the year 1852, and in the years of the struggling infancy of this district.  Mrs. De Boos became extremely well known to the residents, and was greatly esteemed and respected on account of her kindly and hospitable disposition and for her readiness to help and assist any of her fellows in the frequent times of stress which occurred in the early days.  She was possessed of remarkable vitality, and her interest in the progress and events of the district was always keen.  She was born in England on 25th November 1817, and was, consequently in her 100th year at the time of her death.  She leaves a family of two - a son (Mr. C. L. De Boos, senr.) and a daughter (Mrs. Stewart), both of Euroa, as well as a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and though the notice was short, it was at tended by a large concourse of residents of the township and district surrounding.  The Rev. F. Grist conducted the burial service, Mr. Jas. O'Neill superintending the funeral arrangements.   The Horsham Times (Vic. : 1882 - 1954), Friday 2 February 1917 [4] With the passing of Mrs. De Boos Euroa loses a pioneer who had linked the town with the early days of Victoria. She would have celebrated her 100th birthday this year. Until her last illness she retained full possession of her faculties. She took keen interest in the war, and, until a short time ago worked steadily on soldiers' comforts. Mrs. De Boos' husband, who died 19 years ago, was a reporter for a Melbourne newspaper, and in 1849 was sent to Anderson's Creek to write an account of the first gold discovery.  Her brother was also in the newspaper business, and assisted in the production of the first issue of the Illustrated London News.  This brother was a frequent visitor to Australia - coming to see Mrs. De Boos every three years.  His last visit, was at the age of 84, and he died shortly afterwards. Mr. and Mrs. De Boos came to Euroa in 1853 and were in business for a number of years. A son and daughter Mr. C. L. De Boos and Mrs. Stewart; nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren survive. The youngest grandson, Sergeant W. K. De Boos (of the National Bank, Hamilton) and the eldest great-grandson, Bugler Roy Emmett, are serving at the front.
