Biography

Sarah Lane was born on 8 Nov 1746 in Joppa, then part of Baltimore County, Maryland, to Samuel and Jane Lane. [1] Sarah married Joseph Hays probably around 1766. [2][3] Sarah's father, Samuel Lane, deeded over the property “Gill’s Prospect” to Joseph Hays in 1779. Sarah apparently remained in Baltimore County when her father and other siblings migrated to western Pennsylvania. In 1801 Joseph was appointed the guardian of the children of Sarah's brother, John Lane. [4] Sarah's date of death is unknown.

Research Notes

This Sarah Lane has been confused with a Sarah Elizabeth Lane who married Abraham Bradley and lived and died in South Carolina. It's unlikely that a woman of English descent in the 18th century would have a middle name, and it's implausible that she would marry a man from Virginia and end up in South Carolina. It's more plausible that she married a man from Baltimore County, Joseph Hays, who had known connections to the Lane family, to include a land transaction with Sarah's father and being appointed the guardian of her brother's children.

Lane-22378 and Lane-2410 do not represent the same person because: Different husbands

Joseph Hays-7806 was mostly likely the husband of Sarah Lane, not Abraham Bradley, who married a Sarah Elizabeth Lane and lived and died in South Carolina. It's implausible that a woman in Baltimore County would marry a man from Virginia and end up in South Carolina. It's more plausible that she married a man from Baltimore County, Joseph Hays, who had known connections to the Lane family, to include a land transaction with Sarah's father and being appointed the guardian of her brother's children. I recommend either detaching Sarah Lane from Abraham Bradley and the Bradley children and creating a new profile for Sarah Elizabeth Lane, or detach this Sarah Lane from Joseph Hays, Samuel Lane, and Jane Corbin. Unless someone produces a source showing Sarah Lane, daughter of Samuel & Jane Lane, married Abraham Bradley, I'll take action in about a week.
