This person is variously identified as Francis, Thomas or Thomas Francis. In this profile, he is assumed to be Francis, but the alternative name of Thomas is also listed.
It is possible that an original handwritten record is not clear, and can be interpretted as either Thomas or Francis, which could look quite similar.
According to Wrottesley (1910) and Lane (1910), he was Thomas Lane, son of John Lane and Catharine, daughter of Thomas Partrich.(p.164)[4][3] He was born about 1531, based on information in the inquisition into his father's death, which identifies "Thomas Lane, aged 45 year and more, is his son and next heir" (p.166).[4]
According to Burke (1835), he was Francis Lane, son of John Lane of Bentley and Catherine, daughter of Thomas Patrick of King's Bromley.[1]
Richardson (2011) refers to him as Francis Lane of Bromley Hall.[2]
He was probably born in the family estate at Bentley in Staffordshire, England.
Note that in some unsourced family trees, he is assumed born around 1520. However this would be inconsistent with his father's birth of around 1511.
Francis Lane married Catherine, daughter of Richard Trentham, esq, according to Burke (1835).[1]
Thomas Lane married Katherine, daughter of Richard Trentham of Rocester, according to Lane (1910) and Wrottesley (1910).(p.167)[4][3]
There is no record known for their marriage. It would likely have been about 1560, based on his age and the birth of eldest son John about 1564.
Thomas Lane is noted in 1575 in a fine levied between Thomas Lane, armiger, and others, by which Thomas acquired about 100 acres of land in Bentley.(p.167)[4]
Thomas Lane and Katharine his wife are also listed in a fine levied later in 1575 where they release rights in the manor at King's Bromley.(p.167)[4]
In 1576, Thomas Lane, armiger, was assessed to find two light horseman to support Queen Elizabeth.(p.167)[4]
Rovert Glover, Somerset Herald, during his visitation to Staffordshire in 1583, summoned Thomas Lane, who was described as of Hyde and Bentley, armiger and Justice of the Peace.(p.167)[4][5]
The Lane coat-of-arms on his tomb were "Party per fesse or and azure, a chevron gule between 3 mullets counterchanged."(p.168)[4]
He died on 9 May 1588, according to the post-mortem inquisition into his estate.(p.170)[4] Wrottesley (1910) further indicates "... he was buried in the Lane chancel of St. Peter's Church, Wolverhampton, where a handsome altar tomb was set up in his memory. This tomb still exists in good preservation, and shows a recumbent figure of him in armour with the Elizabeth ruff round his neck. At his side lies his wife in the well known dress of the period."[4] A photo of the tomb is available here. (This church is within several km of Bentley.)
Burke (1835) says he died in the 31st Elizabeth (1588/1589).[1]
Note: The London Metropolitan Archives indicate that a Thomas Lane was buried in St. James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex on 9 March 1589. This would be for another Thomas Lane, as the burial date is too late and the location is inconsistent.[6]
According to Burke (1835), his children were John, Thomas, Richard and Cassandra.[1] Wrottesley (1910) and Lane (1910) indicate he had 5 sons and 7 daughters according to the monument at Wolverhampton, including John (heir), Thomas, Michael and Cassandra. (p.167)[4][3]
His son and heir John Lane was born about 1564, according to the post-mortem inquisition into his estate. In that inquisition, it identifies son John as of age "24 years or more", so born 1564 or earlier (p.171).[4] (1565 according to Lane (1910).[3])
The birth dates of the other children are not known. However based on their information, the following may be estimated:
Burke (1835) indicates that Richard lived in Kiernes in Monmouthshire and does not identify a son Michael, while Lane (1910) indicates Michael lived in Kiernes Monmouthsire and does not identify a son Richard. Richardson (2011) indicates that Richard lived in Harpole Northamptonshire.
