Biography

In early 1900's, in Alabama, my Grandfather, John Thomas Lane, worked hard at several types of employment to help raise his large family, but he also loved music. He had a "singing school" and "Dad" (Tom) Speer, of the "Singing Speer Family", was in his singing school. By 1903, he was part of the Faculty of the Eureka Normal School of Music, Indian Territory, and was published that year in the Eureka Publishing Company's Eureka Echoes songbook. In about 1925, the family moved to Norman, Oklahoma. Later, he attended many singing conventions in Norman, Oklahoma City, and surrounding towns, with his daughters, including my mother, Opal. At one of these conventions is where my mother met my father, John Paul Beeman. I feel sad I never got to know my Grandfather Lane! -- Karen
