Biography
Daughter Ann was born in Stockland, which was then an enclave of Dorset wholly surrounded by Devon on 21 February 1796 and his age estimated from this. From daughter's birth record, his wife is also known to have been named Ann. Unfortunately, all these names are very common but there are two prime candidates for his marriage; firstly that between a James Lane and an Ann Rockett which took place at Membury (3 miles from Stockland) on 3 April 1787 and secondly with an Ann Manning on 11 February 1787 at Axminster (5 miles from Stockland). Given the proximity, I have gone for Ann Rockett. Also, other parts of the family had connections with Membury.
