Charles Witt was born and raised in Virginia, and lived there until he was seventeen years old. He then moved to the eastern part of Tennessee and from there to Crab Orchard, Ky., Lincoln County. He moved from there to Green County. While there he married Agnes Logan, daughter [1] of Colonel Benjamin Logan. He moved from there to Green County east of Little Barren River. He raised the following children, John, Betsy, Jane, Nancy, Julia, Charles, Jack, Polly, Jirusha and Emily. From there he went to Barren County, now Metcalfe County, on the east side of Pilot Knob to the farm now owned by Dr. S. R. York and Luther Rhea of Center, Ky. He discovered a Salt Petre Cave on the adjoining farm where he made salt petre and gun powder. When he used the dirt from this cave, he went to the cave now known as Mammouth (sic) Cave. His ox and cart tracks can still be seen. Also the hopper and troughs which he used in making Saltpetre. He was also a Herb Doctor, making pills, tonics, etc.

↑J. B. Lane refers to his grandmother as a daughter of Gen. Benjamin Logan, when she was actually his niece. Since Agnes Logan was young when her father William Logan died, General Logan and his family may have played an important in her upbringing, and thus been like a father to her.
