For more information about William's army and mounted police careers click on link below. When only sixteen years of age, William Lane enlisted in the 39th Dorset Regiment of Foot on 23 December 1812 and was stationed in France from late 1815 to1818. Then the regiment was sent to Ireland, remaining there until its departure from England to Sydney in 1826. The marriage of WilliamLane to Sarah Boyd(e) took place in Dublin in February 1820. Sarah’s father was a Thomas Boyd(e). On 6 May 1826 William and Sarah, with their sons William and James and daughter Elizabeth set out for Sydney onthe ship England. The ship was carrying convicts, and William was part of the guard under Major D’Arcy. They arrived at Sydney on 18 September 1826. Corporal William Lane remained with his regiment in Sydney until his transfer to the New South Wales Mounted Police on 17 May 1832. During his time with the Mounted Police he was promoted to Sergeant. He became a well-known figure “mounted on his horse and armed with a carbine, brace of horse pistols and broadsword” when the neighbourhood of Parramatta was a place greatly dreaded by the early travellers through that district. It was in the early 1840s that he took up duty at Windsor. In 1844 he captured the notorious cattle stealer Daley, near Pitt Town. At the time of the first Windsor election in 1843, Sergeant Lane and six mounted troopers with drawn swords had to escortBowman and his son-in-law Cadell through the town in their carriage when the angry crowd stoned them.
