John Wesley Lang was born on 13 September 1894 in Muscogee, Escambia County, Florida, United States.[1][2] He was one of the two youngest children of John Wesley Lang (1845-1913), after whom he was named, and Saphronia Jane (Hildreth) Lang (1848-1928). He was the twin of Sophia Jeanette (Lang) Delmar (1894-1964)
John was 5 years old when the 1900 United States Census was taken. John was living with his parents and 5 siblings in Muscogee, Escambia County, Florida.[3]
When the 1910 United States Census was taken, John was 15 years old and living in the household of his parents, still in Muscogee.[4]
John Wesley Lang served in the United States Navy during World War I, 1917-1918. He was stationed at Pensacola Naval Air Station, then at the Naval Air Station in Pauillac, France, then at the Naval Air Station in Brest, France. He was a machinist mate on dirigibles.[5][6]
When the 1920 United States Census was taken, John W. Lang was lodging in the household of William A. Wells on West Gadsden Street in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida. John was working as a salesman in a clothing store.[7]
John Wesley Lang married Barbara Frost Herring on 31 December 1924 in Escambia County, Florida.[8] [9]
John and Frost Lang were living at 1601 Cervantes Street in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida when the 1930 United States Census was taken. John was working as a life insurance salesman.[10]
They were renting at 1425 East Gonzales Street in Pensacola when the 1935 Florida States Census was taken. John's occupation was a salesman.[11]
John and Frost Lang were living in Pensacola in the household of Frost's father, Henry Herring, when the 1940 United States Census was taken. The house was located at 1425 East Gonzales Street--the same as address recorded for them on the 1935 Florida State Census. John was employed as a typewriter repairman.[12]
John and Frost were still living at the same address as Frost's parents when the 1945 Florida State Census was taken. John was working as a typewriter machinist.[13]
When the 1950 United States Census was taken, they were still living with the Herrings at the same address. John was working as the manager of a typewriter company.[14]
As far as can be shown with available records, John Lang and his wife did not have any children.
John W. Lang was a reporter for the Pensacola Journal in 1916.[15] In 1917, before he joined the Navy, he was working as a clerk and bookkeeper for Meyer Shoe Company in Pensacola, Florida.[1] In 1920 he was working as a salesman in a clothing store.[7] At the time of his marriage in 1925, he was assistant superintendent of the Industrial Life and Health Insurance Company.[9] Per the 1930 United States Census, he was a life insurance salesman, but that record does not list the company for whom he was working.[10] On the 1935 Florida State Census, his occupation was listed as "salesman" but it does not indicate the type of product he was selling.[11] In 1936 he was a repairman for Remington Rand, Inc., an America business machines manufacturer.[16] In 1940 and 1945, he was employed as a typewriter repairman.[12][13] From about 1942 through at least 1960 he was the manager of Pensacola Typewriter.[17][18][14][19][20][21]
According to his obituary, John Wesley Lang, was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pensacola. He was Past Master of Pensacola Lodge No. 42, F.&A.M. and a member of the Scottish Rite bodies.[22]
