Biography

Gustav was born 27 Oct 1869 to Josephine Fischer and Gustav Lange in Rostock, Mechlenburg-Schwerin, Germany.

His Naturalization Record gives 11 Sep 1883 as the date of his arrival. He was just shy of 14 years old. He might have come as a working member of the crew because he worked on "light boats" in New York Harbor all of his working career. The 1910, 1920, and 1930 United States Censuses all give different dates for his arrival. But he became a naturalized citizen on 12 May 1894.

He married "Emily" (Astrid Emilia Strand Miller) around 1903. She was a young widow of a man he had worked with in the "light boat" government service. She had two young daughters, Elsie and Isabel. On 29 May 1904 their daughter Mildred Josephine Lange was born.

In the 1905 New York State Census, Gustav was listed as "Adalf." He was 35 years old and working as a derrick man in the "light boat" service. He and Emily and the girls were living at 521 57th Street in Brooklyn, New York.

On 16 Apr 1906 his wife Emily died in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Gustav was left with 3 young daughters. Elsie the oldest was only 8. Because of his job with the government "light boats," he was unable to care for the little ones. He made the difficult decision to put them into an orphanage.

Gustav married Elizabeth Johnston on 9 Sep 1908 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.

The 1910 United States Census stated that Gustav was 39 years old and a Keeper on a US Light Ship. He and his family lived at 19 Lincoln Ave, Queens, NY. He and Elizabeth had been married 1 year and had no children of their own. They were raising Elsie, Isabel and Mildred together.

The 1 June 1915 New York State Census enumerated Gustav as 44 years old and a Captain on a Light Ship. It appears that the family had moved to Wyganot Place in Queens. Elsie, age 16, was working as a telephone operator. Isabel was 14 and Mildred, 11.

On the 6 Jan 1920 United States Census Gustav was 51 and a Master of a US Government Light Ship. Elizabeth was keeping house. Isabel, age 19, was a clerk at an Insurance Co., Elsie, 21, and Melide, 16 were telephone operators. The family lived at 1457 74th St. in Brooklyn, Kings, Co., NY.

According to the 1925 New York State Census, Gustav was still a ship Captain. Isabel was a bookkeeper and Mildred, still a telephone operator. Elizabeth was keeping house. The family was living on Fletcher Street in Queens.

The 1930 US Census said that 59 year old Gustav, a light ship captain, owned a home worth $9000. It was located on 115 Drive in Queens. Elizabeth was keeping house. Isabel, 26, was single and a bookkeeper at an insurance office. The family has a radio.

The 1940 US Census enumerated Gustav, age 71, as retired. He and Elizabeth and Isabel were living in the same house on 115 Drive in Queens. Isabel was 39 years old and single. She was still working at an insurance company as a bookkeeper.

In 1944 Gustav and Elizabeth were living at 171 Ridge Street in Glens Falls near where Tom and Elsie lived. This was listed in the Glens Falls City Directory.

The 1950 US Census had Gustav, age 80, and Elizabeth, age 75, were living at 16 Hudson Street in South Glens Falls, New York.

Gustav's wife Elizabeth Johnston Lange died 28 Sep 1951 in Hempstead Nassau, New York, USA.

Gustav's Obituary said that he died 18 May 1953 in Islip, New York. His obituary was from a Brooklyn newspaper. 61 DeMott Avenue was listed as his last address. He was buried in Westbury, Nassau County, New York, USA.
