I have researched my own heritage when I came across this from Peter Schuck:

The clan of which I’m familiar (Steinkamp/Steinkampf) lived in

Oppenwehde/Oppendorf near Bielefeld (of Protestant/Evangelical/Lutheran

denomination) from at least the late 17th century; more specifically one

line came to be called Lange thru an 18th-century marriage, the

progenitors of my late half-uncle, with his immediate forebear’s

immigration the USA in the latter 19th century.

The earliest Steinkampf I show was one Gerd Hermann for whom I have no

dates, however his son Johann Ludolph (Rudolph) was born on 4Mar1696 and

his son Johann Friederich Steinkamp took his wife’s surname Lange (she was

evidently propertied).
