Birth and Baptism

We first find Pierre with his baptism in the registers of Saint-Joachim of Châteauguay, Province of Québec under the name Pierre Langevin, dated 1st November 1785, the birth date being omitted. We do know He's the son of Pierre Langevin and Agathe Hébert from the parish. His Godparents were Basile Mathieu and Marie Sophie Pitre. Pierre was the 4th of a family 11 children.[1]

Marriage

On the 15th of August 1808, Pierre (using Bergevin as a last name now) who's now 23 and working as a plowman, decides to get married to a local girl in his hometown. He takes for bride Angélique Mercier who's only 17, the daughter of Albert Mercier, a local plowman, and Magdeleine Sauvé. But, they were already intimite for a while! They already had a child: Pierre "junior" who had been born on April 17th of the same year and who had been baptised in Les Cèdres. We know this because during the ceremory, the priest legitimised his baptism. The little Pierre would be the first of a long list of children, 14 have been found so far, between 1808 and 1835. [2]

Death and Burial

Having lived a for a period in Les Cèdres (from 1808 to 1823), Pierre then moved to St-Timothée (close to Beauharnois), where he would remain until his death, on 20 September 1863. Pierre must have been a prominent figure in his new community because his burial record tells us he was buried in the church of the parish, under the main aisle, in the middle of the nave. All that was found was that one of his sons, Célestin, was a provincial deputy for the Beauharnois constituency. [3] Was that enough to grant such an honor to the burial of Pierre? We don't know yet. [4]

Note on Last Name

Pierre comes from a family that used Bergevin and Langevin as a last name interchangeably. Bergevin being the proper last name, Langevin being the "dit" name. Records also have been found with Bargevin (more rural pronunciation) which, in French, sounds pretty much the same as Bergevin (more urban, and proper pronunciation).
