Biography

James Rufus Langford was killed in a gun battle in June of 1905. He and his family had been sharecroppers and had rented from a Mr. Williams. Mr. Williams had decided to take James crops and give the land to a friend of his. A gun battle ensued and James and Mr. Williams were both killed. It is said that the shot that killed Mr. Williams came from one of James' daughters. That has never been fully verified.

James Rufus Langford was born on February 17, 1861 in Leake Co. Mississippi. His parents were Young Marion Langford (1831 - 1916) and Elizabeth Jane (Nutt) Langford (1834 - 1896).
