Private in the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry regiment, Company F. Enlisted on 26 December 1863 from Ferrisburg, Vermont. He was 36 years old when he enlisted. Mustered out 30 August 1865 in New York.
His brothers Lewis and Loudon also served in the 54th.
