Biography

Birth and Origins

Henry Langley, esq, was the eldest son of Major Henry Langley, esq., of Brittas Castle and Maria Penton, the daughter of Henry Penton, Esq. of Pentonville, Middlesex, M.P. for Winchester. [1]

According to Burke:

Henry Langley "formerly of Brittas Castle, co. Tippeary, now possesed of landed property near Thurles, Fethard, and Ardfinan, co. Tipperary, J.P. and D.L., late of 2nd Life Guards." [2]

Marriage and Family

15 Dec 1845, Henry married Harriet Maria Bradshaw, only child of James Bradshaw, Esq., M. P. for Canterbury. [3]

"On 15 at St George's, Hanover Square, Henry Langley, Esq. of Brittas Castle, County Tipperary, to Harriet daughter of James Bradshaw, Esq. M.P." [4]

Military and Interests

In 1863 Henry was "Late an officer 2nd Life Guards. At present a captain in the 2nd or South Middlesex Rifle Volunteers; and Fellow of Royal Horticultural Society."[6]

Arms

Arms - Zfb., on a fess sq. a crescent or, in chief three hurts, quartering, GRACE of Brittas Castle: gm. a lion rampant pertess. arg. and or. Crest- A cockatrice, wings addorsed ss., combed wattled and spurred gu., charged with a crescent or. Motio- Fide sed cui vide. Residence - 31 Queen's Gate Terrace, London, W. [7]

"Copy of confirmation of arms to the descendant of Henry Langley of Priestown, Co. Tipperary, by Margaret, daughter of Oliver Grace of Brittas Castle, Co. Tipperary and to his great grandson, Henry Langley of London, eldest son of Henry Langley and grandson of Oliver Langley, both of Brittas Castle, March 3, 1870." Manuscript in Dublin Library. [8]

Captain Henry Langley is listed as one of the 'aristocracy of Kensington':
