William was born in 1524, son of Laurence Langley and Katherine.[1]
Burke (in his 1899 editions) states that "He [Lt Henry Langley] was the son of Deodatus Langley who was the son of Rev. William Langley, Rector of Prestwich 1569-1611, who was supposed to be descended from the Langleys of Agecroft Hall, Co Lancaster."[2]
He was appointed as rector by the Ashton family of Chadderton.
During a turbulent time, William Langley had non-conformist leanings. In the summer of 1591, he was forced to recant an earlier sermon that questioned the monarch's prerogative in ecclesiastical matters, and he was instrumental in leading the clergy of the deanery of Manchester in their opposition to wearing the clerical surplice in 1595. [4]

Research Notes
Of interest is The autobiography of Mr. Langley of Prestwich which appears to have been written by the son of William's cousin or relative, a curate, M. Langley.
He says,
"I was borne at Prestwiche Anno Christi 1596, my father M. Langley being at the time curet to his cosen who was ye parson there." & then mentions Mr William Langley[9]
