Biography

William Langley was born 8 March 1815 to John Langley and Mary Ann Olivier and baptized 25 September 1816 in Opelousas.[1] The baptism record also gives his grandparents names.

He wed Marie Anne Delafosse on 21 February 1838 in Opelousas.[2]

Censuses

At the time of the 1840 US Census William is living in Calcasieu Parish with his wife and a son under the age of five years. His mother might be living next door.[3]

In the 1850 census there appears to be some errors in transcription that put him with another family and lists his wife as "Marcelite" living in the next household.[4] He is a planter and his mother still appears to live next door. There are a number of children in the household, divided in such a way to suggest they might not all be children of the marriage:

William-35, Marcelite-30, Louis-11, Leandre-9, Marie-7, Jean-5, Villeneuve-3, Homere-4 mos. old, and Clemence-13, and Celine-11.

By the time of the 1860 census they are still in Calcasieu Parish and their eldest son has left the household and they've had another child:[5]

William-45, Mary Ann-42, Leandre-19, Mary-17, Jean-15, Alfred-13, Homer-10, William-7.

William and Mary Ann are empty nesters in Hickory Flat, Calcasieu Parish at the time of the 1870 census.[6]

William lives until at least June 15, 1880 when he seems to appear twice on the Hickory Flat census as a widower of 68 years of age who worked all but 12 weeks of the year.[7][8]
