Biography

William Langley was born 8 March 1815 to John Langley and Mary Ann Olivier and baptized 25 September 1816 in Opelousas, Louisiana. The baptism record also gives his grandparents names. [2]

He wed Marie Anne Delafosse on 21 February 1838 in Opelousas.[3]

At the time of the 1840 U.S. Census, William was living in Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana with his wife and a son under the age of five years; his mother was probably the woman living next door.[4] In the 1850 census there are errors in transcription that put him with another family and list his wife as "Marcelite" living in the next household. He was a planter and his apparent mother was still next door. There were a number of children in the household, listed in such a way as to suggest they might not all be children of this marriage.[5] By the time of the 1860 census they were still in Calcasieu Parish; their eldest three have left the household and they've had another child.[6] William and Mary Ann were empty-nesters in Hickory Flat, Calcasieu Parish at the time of the 1870 census.[7]

William lived until at least June 15, 1880 when he seems to appear twice on the Hickory Flat census as a widower 68 years of age who worked all but 12 weeks of the year.[8][9]
