Biography

Augusta Rosalia Langworthy was the daughter of Phebe Ann (Smalley) Langworthy (1823-1901) and Thomas Langworthy She was born in Friendship, Allegany County, New York, in 1849.

Rosalia came from a long line of Protestant dissenters, including her fifth great-grandfathers John Sanford (abt.1605-bef.1653) and Samuel Gorton Sr. (bef.1593-bef.1677). Her maternal grandfather, Reuben Smalley (abt.1780-abt.1835), was one of the first European settlers in Allegeny County, then called Genesee, when he contracted to buy land in Friendship in 1804.[1] Her paternal grandparents, Asa Langworthy (1782-1868) and Ruth A. (Crandall) Langworthy (1795-1863), came to Little Genesee in the early 1830s.

A birth record for Augusta Rosalia Langworthy has not been found. The1850 US Census described "Augusta R." as one year old, so she must have been born before it was enumerated on 23 Sep 1850. The record shows that both parents were 21 years old and had been married for nearly three years, since 18 Dec 1847.[2] The family lived next door to her maternal grandmother, Rhoda Moore (abt.1793-abt.1885), a seamstress, and her mother's siblings, William J. Smalley, 28 years old, Rachel Smalley, 25, Fanny Smalley, 23, and Mary Smalley, 19.[3] [4]

Rosalia's parents moved to Wellsville around 1852, the year when Rosalia's father contracted to buy property on Plank Road near Main Street in what would become the town of Wellsville. He himself does not appear to have had any family money or property of his own, so it is likely that he put up the money his wife had inherited from her family.

[5] Her brother Edwin I. Langworthy (1851-1940) was born 29 April 1851, probably in Friendship, but the next brother, Oscar Sanford Langworthy (1852-1921), was born in Wellsville, which part of Scio until the towns split in 1856. Her sister Mary A Langworthy (abt.1854-1855) came along around 1854.1855 New York State Census, E.D. 1, Scio, Allegany, **Thomas Longworthy, 25; **Phebe Longworthy, 25, **Rosalia Longworthy, 6, **Mary Longworthy, 1, **Edwin Longworthy, 4, **Oscar Longworthy, 2. : Tue Aug 01 23:42:04 UTC 2023.

William Franklin Langworthy asserted that Rosalia's father was a station agent for the railroad but there is no evidence for this claim.[6] The Erie Railroad, completed in 1851, connected Wellsville, Scio, and Friendship and there were stations in each of these towns. The 1855 state census for Scio, which was then a part of Wellsville, described Thomas Henry Langworthy as a lumberman and the owner of land.[7] The region was heavily forested and lumber was a major industry, along with tanning. In 1855 the family lived in a frame house worth $350. Mary, listed as 1-year-old in June, when the census was enumerated, died on 12 Sep 1855 and was buried in the Johnson Cemetery in Wellsville.[8] Rosalia, six or seven years old at the time, must have remembered both the birth and death of her sister.

Rosalia's father may have been injured, possibly in a lumber accident, for the 1860 US Census described him as a "day laborer." This census also records the birth of Rosalia's sister, Cora, age 4.[9] Cora must have died before the next census was taken, for she does not appear in the 1865 New York census. This record shows another sister, Nellie, four years old, as a member of the family. Cora would have been nine or ten in 1865.[10] This census attributes no occupation at all to her father, who died the following year, in 1866. [11] Nellie does not appear in any subsequent census records and probably died before 1870.

After her father's death, Rosalia's mother became involved in the lengthy legal proceedings related to the property he had contracted to buy in Wellsville

Very shortly after her father's death, Rosalia met George R. Price, a Union army veteran from Virgil, New York, and a Baptist who worked with the Erie Railroad. They married before Mar 9, 1869, when their son, David Manly Price, was born in Wellsville. [12] In 1870 the three of them lived next door to, or possibly in the same building as, Rosalia's mother and surviving siblings, Edwin and Oscar.[13] Rosalia gave birth to her second child, Mary E. Price, in Wellsville on 7 November that year, whe was 21 years old.

Rosalia and George moved their family before 1875 to Hornellsville, a major hub on the Erie Railroad. George was now working as a fireman, a position of great importance and danger, and second only to engineer. [14] He held the same job in 1880, when he, Rosalia, Manley, Mary, and Rosalia's mother lived together in Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York.[15] Dunkirk, on the shores of Lake Erie, was the western end of the original main line that ran 450 miles east to Piermont Pier on the Hudson River. At the time, it was the longest railroad in the world.[16]

The family moved from Dunkirk, New York, to Bradford, Pennsylvania, where Manly graduated from high school, and then to Minneapolis, where George worked for the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul railroad. They lived in Minneapolis for one year before moving to Iowa:

"I remember hearing Papa talk about the times when he lived in Dunkirk, New York, and Bradford, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from high school." wrote Frances Rosalia Price, my grandmother. "When the Chicago, Milwaukee, & S. Paul railroad tracks were laid in the middle west, my grandparents, George and Rosalia Price, and their family, D. Manly and Mary E., who was one year younger than her brother, left Bradford and found a new home in Sioux City. My grandparents spent one year in Minneapolis and they all arrived in Sioux City in 1886."[17]

An 1887 Sioux City, Iowa, Directory listed George Price as an engineer and his son as a fireman for the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad. Rosalia, George, Manley, and Mary rented a dwelling at 1520 Fourth Street in 1888 and 1889. Before 1892 they moved to a place on 615 Iowa Street, which they also rented. [18], [19][20]

In 1894, after eight or so years in Iowa, Rosalia, George, and Mary made a new life in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They lived at 507 North Summit Avenue that year.[21] While George continued to drive trains on the Milwaukee Road, Rosalia became active in local community organizations, including the missionary society of the First Baptist Church, which met at her home to discuss "Western China" in November 1895,[22]

An active, early member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Freemason organization open to women, Rosalia supported many charitable organizations in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Sioux City, Iowa. The five points of the Eastern Star stand for women in the Bible: Adah, the daughter, whose sword and shield symbolize respect and honor Ruth, the widow, whose sheaf of barley figures survival, Esther, the wife, whose crown stands for fidelity and sacrifice, Martha, the sister whose broken column represents endurance under trial, and Electra, the mother whose cup signifies charity and love [23] The order was founded in 1850 and organized its first Grand Chapter in Michigan in 1867, although it was not approved as a body of Masonic Fraternity until 1873.[24] Rosalia hosted about thirty-five members of the Order of the Eastern Star at her home at 419 Minnesota Avenue on 16 Mar 1897.[25].

Rosalia had an artistic side, a trait she may have inherited from her dressmaking mother and grandmother and passed down to her daughter, Mary E Price, a painter. She typed her party invitations onto green or pink ribbons and awarded hand-painted china dishes as party favors.[26] To show their esteem, Rosalia's friends presented her with a copy of Owen Meredith's "Lucile" in March, 1897.[27].

Rosalia's granddaughter, Frances Rosalia Price Latta, wrote, "I wish I had known her. She enjoyed doing things with her hands. I inherited a quilt called the "Lone Star" pattern--the star was done in a red and pink mottled calico and yellow cotton on a white background with a border of the same pink and yellow. At the same time, I was given a crocheted white tablecloth done in the lovely filet pattern which my daughter Michele owns. Such tiny perfect little stitches showed great patience and persistence. She was a craftsman who made things that reflect a love of beauty, something precious to pass on to future generations. She was a small woman with brown eyes and white hair, and she had the reputation of being very competent, particular, and tidy."[28]

Augusta Rosalia Price died 21 July 1897 in Sioux Falls. Her family buried her in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery of that city, adorning her grave with the Eastern Star. [29]
