Biography

"Mary Lanier, nothing is known of her parentage; her descendants say that she was married about 1734, so she must have been born around 1715; She married James Bass who was living in Bertie County, NC at the time of their marriage; he was the son of Edward Bass, and the grandson of John Bass and Love Harris who were married in 1695 in Nansemond County, VA. Mary might have been the daughter of Lemuel Lanier who was living in Bertie in 1734, but he left no family records, or will in Granville County, NC. She could be descended from Mark Lanier of Lower Norfolk County (next to Nansemond County); and she might be descended from John Lanier of Surry County, VA who left no will, and his known children are four sons."^[1]

• Clement Lanier is listed as her Father using the the same source; however, the "Lanier..." does not have Clement listed as her father but as only a possibility. Need some more convincing evidence.
• I have found no evidence or source for her middle name Phil Phillips MD
