in a flash flood. His widow, Margaret, made application
August 16, 1794 for Letters of Administration "of Lewis
Lanier late of then Effingham, now Screven". (Minutes of
Screven Co. Ga. and Georgia Gazette, August 28, 1794,
page 2, col 1).

Which Lewis Lanier?

This Lewis LANIER (son of Lemuel, grandson of Bird Thomas, and great-grandson of John Lanier III) should not be confused with his second cousin Lewis Lanier, also born in 1753, or his second cousin once removed Lewis Lanier, also born in 1753, or another second cousin once removed Lewis Lanier born about, you guessed it, 1753. Yes, there are apparently four Lewis Laniers all born in or about 1753. Rough outline below:

Other Notes

An article in Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine says the following:[2]

"On November 23, 1757 … assigned to Elizabeth Lanier, widow of Sampson Lanier, deceased, her dower of said Sampson’s estate".

“A marriage bond, dated 23, July, 1758, on file in Brunswick County, Va., shows that the widow, Elizabeth Lanier married secondly Cuthbert Smth, and an order of Feb. 27, 1759, appointed Cuthbert Smith guardian of Rebecca Lanier, orphan of Sampson Lanier, and one of Sept. 5, 1759 appointed their uncle Lemuel as guardian of Burwell Lanier, Buckner Lanier, Winifred Lanier, Martha Lanier and Anne Lanier".

"No mention is made in these records [guardianship records for the children] of a son [of Sampson Lanier and Elizabeth Chamberlain] named Lewis Lanier, who it is claimed was also a son of this couple, but there is a marriage bond in Sussex County, dated Sept. 21, 1778, between "Lewis Lanier, son of Sampson Lanier and Anne Butler, daughter of Thomas Butler."

"In Clarke's North Carolina State Records, Burwell and Lewis Lanier appear in Anson County, North Carolina, the first as a witness in 1776 against James Perry, a New Light Baptist, and the second (Lewis) as a member of the House of Commons in 1787 and 1788."

However, a letter in the following issue from a descendant of Agnes Lanier stated that the probate records of Brunswick County, Virginia say that William Lanier was appointed guardian of Lewis and Agnes Lanier, orphans of Sampson Lanier, on 23 April 1763. "They also show that prior to this Lemuel Lanier was appointed guardian for Lewis and Agnes and described them as orphans of Sampson Lanier".[3] See also 'Virginia County Records'.[4]

'Jackson and Starke'.[5]

Lewis Lanier, son of Sampson Lanier and Elizabeth Chamberlayn; married Ann Butler then Ester Thorn.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Lewis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Lewis:

Lanier-514 and Lanier-491 are not ready to be merged because: I cannot yet determine if these are the same two fellows or if they are cousins with the same names. Possibly a wife was associated with the wrong fellow, or a fellow associated with the wrong parents. This needs a bit more study if anyone wants to help. Thanks.
