Biography

Bertie Elmer Lansdell is born on August 14, 1889 in Chinguacousy Township, Peel County, Ontario, Canada [1]. His parents are William Lansdell (1851-1915) and Hannah Robinson (1852-1892).

The 1891 census records show Bertie, at the age of two, living with his family on a farm in Chinguacousy. The farm is in Concession 2 West, Lot 15 which is between Chinguacousy Road and McLaughlin Road probably just south of Mayfield Road. This is part of the city of Brampton today. In the 1901 census records, Bertie is 11 years old living on the farm with his family [3]. He is still there are the age of 21 in the 1911 census records [4] and now the census takes lists his name as “Bert” rather than “Bertie.” (As far as is known the adult name “Bert” sticks for the rest of his adult life.) His father dies in 1915 and in the 1921 census records Bert is living on a farm with one brother, William, and one sister, Theresa [5]. It is assumed these three are still living on the family farm in Concession 2 West, Lot 15 (the census record does not actually provide an address). In the 1921 record, Bert is 31 years old and still un-married.

The 1921 census record is the last record that has been found for Bert. However, from an obituary of his wife in 2014, it is known that at some point Bert marries Jean Isobel Wilson (1916-2014) [6]. It is not know if they have any children.

This census record cannot be found on the federal government’s web site - http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca -- as the search engine reads the handwritten surname as Sondedele. However, the transcribers for automatedgenealogy.com have correctly interpreted the first letter as an “L”. They then go on to spell the surname “Lansdale” which, given the handwriting, is as good a guess as any. The correct spelling of the surname is “Lansdell” which is used here (although the census taker would not have known this). It was only with the help of automatedgenealogy.com that this record was located.
