Biography

Little is known of Phillip Lantz. To date, no birth or baptismal records have been located. Census data allows us to infer the first name of his wife as "Catherine", and the existence of three children:

  1. Elizabeth, born about 1827
  2. Elam, born about 1847
  3. Harmon, born about 1850

No records of any other children have been located, and there is no reasonable explanation for the 20-year gap without children.

Data Discerned from Census Records

He appears in Harrison County, Virginia in the 1830 U.S. Census. [1] He is identified as a male between 20 and 30 years old, indicating a possible birth year range of 1800 to 1810. There is a female listed in the household in the same age range, and therefore with the assumed same birth year range. There is a single child listed, a female under the age of 5 (likely born between 1824 and 1830).

In the 1840 U.S. census of Harrison County, Virginia, Phillip "Lantz" is age 30-40, his wife is age 20-30, and there are two female children between the age of 10 and 15. [2] This additional female child has not yet been identified, nor is it confirmed whether she survived to adulthood.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, he is identified as Phillip "Lance" and living in District 5 in Barbour County, Virginia. [3] This is the first census which lists all members of a household by name. In this census, he is identified as 51 years of age, making his birth year about 1799. His occupation is listed as "farmer". Also in the household are:

  • Catherine Lance, age 43 (approximate birth year 1807)
  • Elam Lance, age 3 (approximate birth year 1847)
  • Harmon Lance, age 7 months (approximate birth Jan 1850)

It is noted that, by 1850, the oldest and only daughter documented in the 1830 census is no longer in the household. A marriage record from Harrison County, Virginia documents the marriage of Reuben Campbell and Elizabeth Lance, with the license issued 17 February 1843. [4] Phillip Lance signs off on the marriage as father of the bride. It is reasonable to conclude that Elizabeth is the daughter identified in the 1830 Census. This Elizabeth died in Upshur County, WV, in June 1885, with a reported age of 52. [5] This age would seem to be incorrect, as it would make her age just ten years old when she married.

In the 1860 U.S. Census for Barbour County, Phillip "Lane" is listed as age 59, and Catherine is 54. [6] Both are listed as being born in Virginia. Also listed in the household are "William Lane (Elam), age 13, and "Harmon Lane", age 11.

The household directly preceding Phillip's on the 1850 census is that of Reuben Campbell and his wife Elizabeth, indicating their farms were adjacent to one another. Elizabeth is listed as 33 years old, suggesting a birth year of 1827, corresponding with the "female under 5" entry in 1830 and making her 16 at the time of her marriage and 58 at the time of her death.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, Phillip "Lance" is identified as 69 years of age, and Catherine is 63. [7] Catherine is identified as unable to write. Harmon is 20 and the only remaining child in the home. Elam "Lance" is the next documented household, with his wife Mary and 7 month old daughter Melissa.
