Biography

Emma Elsina Lantz was born 10 Feb 1881 in White Oak Township, McLean County, Illinois to Abraham Lowden and Laura Lucy (Taylor) Lantz.[1] She moved with the family to Monroe County, Mississippi in 1896,[2] In 1900, she is working as a nurse, residing with her sister Ollie and her husband Wilbur in Hobart Township, Lake County, Indiana.[3] She married Harry Eugene Hosmer 23 Aug 1905 in Monroe County, Mississippi.[4] By 1910, they resided in Helena, Telfair County, Georgia, along with Harry's son from a previous marriage, where he worked as a machinist.[5] They resided in Helena in 1920.[6] In 1923, they resided at 39 Dixie Avenue in Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia.[7] In 1925 they resided at 3000 North Miami Avenue in Miami, Florida where Harry was working as a grocer.[8] This building housed the grocery store as well as their residence. In 1928, the grocery store was still operating at that address, but they resided at 48 NW 30th Street.[9] Although their ages and birth locations are incorrect in the census, they returned to Helena, Telfair County, Georgia where they are enumerated in 1930.[10] In 1935, they resided in Eastman, Dodge County, Georgia.[11] In 1940, they resided at 227 College Avenue in Ward 3 of Douglas, Coffee County, Georgia.[12] Harry was absent, but listed, at the time of the enumeration and Emma was recorded as head of household. The "duplex" in which they resided appears to be owned by their neighbor George Bray. After Harry died in 1950, Emma moved to Amory, Monroe County, Mississippi.[13] She apparently moved briefly to Mashulaville to assist in the care of her brother Lee prior to his death in 1955.[14] Emma died in Amory on 21 Jan 1965 and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Amory on 22 Jan 1965.[15]

She is enumerated as Wilbur's sister-in-law; thus, the sister of his wife Olive (or Ollie). Although Emma is never enumerated with her parents, her share in their inheritance can be documented through the sale of her parents' home after her mother's death in 1922. She is erroneously recorded as Irma in the census. The enumerator probably misunderstood the name.
