Biography

Sarah was born in the last quarter of 1848 the daughter of Richard Lardner and Emma Tomkins in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, England. [1] Richard died in Chipping Norton that year before or at about the time of Sarah's birth. [2] Emma was remarried to Joseph Gould in March of 1849 before Sarah's first birthday. [3] Sarah moved with her mother and sister Jemima to Duckington Oxfordshire to live with her step father. By the 1851 British Census she had two half sisters, Louisa and Jane born 1850 and 1851 respectively. [4] She was three years old at the time of that Census. Sarah immigrated with her family to the United States on the ship James Nesmith, which departed Liverpool and arrived at the Port of New York, 19 Sep 1853. Her estimated age was five years old. [5] By the 1860 US Census the family had reached Elgin, Illinois. [6] Sarah was age 11.

Sarah's mother appears in the 1860 Census living with her husband, Joseph Gould and their family. However, according to her step father's obituary, Emma died before the end of 1860. Joseph remarried the following year and his wife gave birth to a daughter in January of 1862. In August of 1862 Joseph was inducted into the Union Infantry during the US Civil War. He was discharged in 1865 in very poor health, after which he returned to the family. Sarah would have been roughly 12 when her mother (and last living parent) died, 14 when her step father enlisted and perhaps 17 when he returned to Elgin. It is not clear when she left home but she does not appear listed with the family in 1870. There is no known record of her life in the 1870 Census, although this could be for any number of reasons. She would have been 21 at the time of the 1870 Census.

At the time of the 1880 US Census Sarah is found in the household of her sister Louisa Gould Webster and her husband Frank Webster. She was working as a dressmaker. [7] The 1900 US Census shows her married to Adoniram Webster for 15 years and living in King County, Washington. [8] Sarah would have been married at roughly age 37. Adoniram would have been 54, or 17 years her senior. They had no children, although he appears to have had children by a previous marriage. By 1910 the couple moved to Angelo, Wisconsin near Sarah's sisters. [9] Adoniram died in 1917 presumably in Monroe County, Wisconsin and is buried in Sparta. [10] The 1920 US Census shows Sarah living in the household of her brother in law Alfred Webster with her sister Jennie Gould Webster. [11] After Alfred's death the sisters were living together in Sparta in 1930. Both are listed as widows in the 1930 US Census. [12]

Sarah Lardner Webster died in 1931 in Sparta, and is buried there at the Mount Hope Cemetery. [13]
