James was born in 1830 in Hockering, Norfolk, England. He was the son of James Large and Judith Curson and lived with his parents in Hockering in 1841[1] and 1851. James was an agricultural labourer.[2]
In 1856 James married Mary Campbell after banns were read in Seaton Ross, Yorkshire.[3][4] The family lived in Holme on Spalding Moor, Yorkshire, in 1861. James was an innkeeper.[5]
He died before 1881, when Mary was said to be a widow.[6]
