Biography

His middle initial could be F. instead of R. He was catholic.

His mother's name was Mary. The last name is not yet known.

He was born in Ireland and immigrated to NY city around 1872. It was told that he had a heated fight with his father, then joined the British protestant militia which infuriated his catholic father and left for America soon afterwards. He was catholic. He worked as a plasterer in New York city. He worked early on for a while in Sorel, Quebec in the shipyards. It was said that his first child, Susan was born in Quebec province.

Ancestry shows that he was naturalized American citizen on October 15, 1873 when he was living at 337 East 39th street NY city. He was a plasterer at that time and his witness was Louis Henry (teacher) living at 39 Hester St. NYC.

His mother could be Mary Higgins according to this: http://www.from-ireland.net/irish-civil-records-death-records/?searchterm=Mary+Larke%2C+Mountmellick and there's a Mary Higgins who marries in 1846 in Mountmellick but upon research at familysearch Mary Higgins's husband was David McKee.

In Familysearch, looking for all Larke men who married a Mary, there is a Thomas Larke (born 1823) who marries Mary McLoughlin (born 1823) who marry 1847-08-17 in St-Catherine's, Dublin, Ireland. His dad is George Larke and her dad is Andrew McLoughlin. https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ALarke~%20%2Bbirth_place%3AIreland~%20%2Bmarriage_place%3AIreland~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AMary%20%2Brecord_country%3AIreland

In Findymypast, there is a Thomas Larke who marries (a Tully, first name not specified) in 1872 in St. Boniface parish, New York City. That church was demolished in 1950 and its records are held at the Church of the Holy Family https://www.churchholyfamily.org/

At the LDS family history center in Montreal in respect to his death, I could order and take a look at film number 1322836 with reference ID = cn 9913 which is part of the New York city Municipal Deaths 1795-1949.

For his mother, Mary Larke's death in 1880 in Mountmellick the film number is 101590, the number of the dossier numérique is 004200672, and the image number is 00052 and it is part of the Ireland Civil Registration Indexes for 1845-1958.

There is a William Larke who dies between July and September 1879 in Tullamore, Ireland. He is 55 so born around 1824. We find this info in the Ireland Civil Registration Indexes 1845-1958 on film number 101589 and numéro de dossier numérique 004200221 and image number 00509.

There is a William Larke with probate record who died 17 July 1879 in Kilbeggan of Westmeath county (which is near Tullamore, Ireland). The benificiary is George Larke, his cousin german. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GTM6-YQW

In the Fall (Sept-Oct)1890 Police Census for NY city, we find that Thomas Larke is alive and 38 years old, so we figure he was born between November 1851 and August 1852. He lives in the circonscription 41 and district assembly 22. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AThomas~%20%2Bsurname%3ALarke~&collection_id=2381996 Also in that same circonscription and district are his wife Susan (Susie) Larke, Susie Larke (14 from Thomas's previous mariage), Robert Larke (11) from Thomas's previous mariage. So does that mean that Susan Reynolds and Thomas Larke continued together to care for Susie Larke and Robert Larke ? But I suppose that when Thomas died then those children were sent elsewhere because Susan Reynolds would have been much poorer.

In Ancestry, I have him Thomas R. Larke born around 1852 in Ireland, married 1887-02-21 in NY to Susan Reynolds, died 1892-03-18 Manhattan (death certificate 9913), father William Larke, wife Delia Turry. Also it says he divorced Delia Turry (1854-) before 1876, but we know she died. He had children Susan Larke (1876-) and Robert Marion Larke (1879-1937) with Delia. He had children Mary Larke (1888-), Loretta Larke (1889-) and Katherine Larke (1890-1969) with Susan Reynolds.

On Ancestry 1880 census, Thomas 28 , plasterer born Ireland and his parents born Ireland too, Delia, 26, housekeeper, born Missouri and her parents born Missouri too, daughter Susan, 4, born Canada, son Robert, 1 born NY.

was told he came from county Cork, city Limerick. But was he born there? He had a previous mariage to Delia Tully. But I can't find records of that mariage. I found though records of 2 children with Delia Tully, Susan born in Canada around 1876 and Robert born in New York around 1879.

On May 9, 1870 a vessel (called: City of Brussels) arrives from Ireland, port of Liverpool, to NY City on which there is a Thomas Larke, labourer, 20 years old (is it him who lied about his age because he would have been 18 in 1870, or is it someone else ?) Page 202 of 491. He's the 996th passenger of 997 and he's part of the steerage = 3rd class passengers. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-5BSY-H?i=201&wc=MX6L-Q29%3A165836701&cc=1849782

See: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8J5-MYG 1870 census January 1871 where there is a Thomas Lark, 19, plasterer living on East 44th street. He is most likely a boarder under the roof of Mrs. Margaret Barry and her children. Other boarders are: Thomas Lawler (30) mason, Joseph Brophy (28) carpenter, John Quinn (21) all from Ireland. So I suppose one or more of these fellows were friends he knew in Ireland and came from the same place. Because he most likely made the voyage with friends. Let's see the people he immigrated with in May 1870.

On October 15, 1873 Thomas Larke residing at 337 East 39th street in NY city becomes naturalized american Citizen. His occupation is plasterer.

In the 1880 US census there is a Thomas Larke, 28, plasterer, born 1852 Ireland and his parents born in Ireland. He is married to a Delia Tully, 26, and they have a daughter Susan Larke 4, born in Canada and a son Robert M. Larke, 1 born in NY city.

I don't find him in the 1870/1871 New York City directory. Either he hadn't arrived when the census was taken or else he was not head of his household.

I don't see him either in the 1871/1872 New York City directory.

I don't find him in the US 1872/1873 New York city Directory. Is he is Québec province or just not mentioned because he is not head of a household?

Thomas died in NY City on March 18, 1892. Ancestry tells me that this is related to Certificate Number 9913. My Dad once had a copy of the death certificate and it stated that he died of duodenitis.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2W63-7R7 This site states that he died in Manhattan March 18, 1892 at 40 years old living at 1522 first Avenue. He was a plasterer. This site shows death of a baby Loretta Larke 10 days old on October 23, 1889 in Manhattan, death certificate number 33137 http://italiangen.org/records-search/deaths.php She must have been premature because her sister May Larke died less than 8 months prior.

https://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/home/1-10-extracts-from-correspondence---part-10 Here we see that Thomas Larke's mother was called Mary Larke and she died between January and March 1880 in Mountmellick in Queen's County, Ireland and she had two sons: Robert Larke and Thomas Larke who emigrated and died in 1892 and who had a daughter Katherine Regina Larke in the Bronx and all this matches up to what I knew. But I learn Thomas's mother's first name and where and when she died and that he had a brother, Robert ! This Mary Larke was born circa 1819 and died at 61 years old. https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ALarke&collection_id=1408347&offset=40. It says: Mary LARKE died circa 1880 in Mount Melick, Queen's Co. had 2 sons Robert & Thomas, Thomas LARKE emigrated and died 1892, his daug Kathleen Reginia LARKE resides E 134th St, Bronx, NY date 1911-03-06. Through the site findmypast.co.uk I found an entry of a Mary Larke who died between Jan and March 1880 at 61 so born around 1819 and the death is recorded at Mountmellick. I paid to get a photocopy of this death. But it says she was a spinster. (error in transcription or wrong person ?) It also said that she died at the Maryborough district asylum of senile decay and exhaustion from melancholia which she had since one year and 5 months. Her occupation had been ladies nurse tender. Here is a photo of that asylum: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mjbrennan/Maryborough_03.jpg and here is an article: http://www.libraryireland.com/topog/M/Maryborough-East-Maryborough-Queens.php. Maryborough is the old name of the town. Now it is Portlaoise.

Here is a Mary Higgins who dies December 6, 1881. Is it in Mountmellick as I asked on the search engine? http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=ire%2fprs%2fmicrofilm05765-06%2f0108

There is a Henry Larke, 71, who died in Mountmellick between July and September 1878, so born around 1807. Could he be Heny William Larke or William Henry Larke and be Mary Larke's husband and Thomas Larke's dad ? The death city is the same and it is a small town, so surely related. I'm guessing he's the dad of Thomas Larke. If so, then Thomas was bord when his dad was quite old: 45. So then Thomas may have several older siblings ! Where would his brother Robert be situated, older or younger ? https://familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3ALarke&collection_id=1408347&offset=40

There is a Robert William Larke who gets married 1886 between October and December in Cork County https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3ARobert~%20%2Bsurname%3ALarke~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1853-1860~%20%2Bresidence_place%3AIreland~%20%2Brecord_country%3AIreland

Gravestone of a Robert Larke in Ireland: https://billiongraves.com/grave/Robert-Larke/13689220# where he died 1893-12-04 at 74 years at the St-Thomas church of Ireland graveyard in city Rathowen, county Westmeath, Ireland. But isn't Church of Ireland = protestant and the family was catholic ?

There is another Robert George Larke in Ireland: http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=us%2fbmd%2fbillion%2f012108819 https://billiongraves.com/grave/Robert-George-Larke/13688610# Gravestone erected by Robert and A??E Larke of Belville in affectionate remembrance of their youngest son Robert George Larke who died on the 20th of March 1883 aged 29 years. On the bottom of the gravestone is enscribed: also his grandparents: James and Mary Morrow who both died and were buried here in 1841. And here is his will: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GTMX-C1L?i=205&wc=M6P3-CWG%3A213610501%2C213690001%3Fcc%3D1921305&cc=1921305

In the site Findmypast, I saw that there was a Mary Larke who was born 1819 and died 1880 in Mountmellick, Laois (Queen's county) !!

In the site Findmypast, there is a marriage in 1844 between a Wm La?r and a Mary in St-Andrew's parish, Dublin county, Dublin City. I searched the entries for that parish in January 1844 and it is a William Lalor, not Larke.

http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=ire%2fprs%2fmicrofilm08828-05%2f0058&parentid=ire%2fprs%2fbap%2f3154073 here we have a Thomas Larke in the index of baptisms between 1829-1856 in St-Paul's church, Dublin City and next to Thomas Larke is the index number 19229. I found the original and it says that this Thomas Larke was baptized March 5, 1856 to Thomas Larke and Mary McLoughlin in St-Paul's catholic church, Dublin.

In the site familysearch I see she was born circa 1819, died Mountmellick Ireland 1880 between january and march and was 61 years old ! Let's search in ancestry.https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FT99-FM4

In the site findmypast there is a Robert Larke married 1871 in Naas, Ireland There is another Robert Larke married 1889 Bantry, Ireland.

Being told that his dad was William Larke in Ireland, here I found a constable called Robert William Larke in Ireland. 2nd row 7th person from the left. It might be his dad, who knows ? http://irishconstabulary.com/topic/1387/Sir-Roger-Casement#.VcAIhfl_Oko

There is a William Lark who married 1846 in Clonmel, Waterford, Tipperary, Ireland https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FTBJ-SZK In Clonmel, there are two catholic parishes: St-Mary's and Ss Peter and Paul

Ancestry says he may be born in Limerick, Cork, Ireland in 1852.

There is a Anne Larke, who died around 1887 in Mountmellick, Laois, Ireland, maybe related to his Mom Mary who died around 1880 in Mountmellick.
