Biography

William Larner, known as Willie, was born in on January 22, 1884, at Bodham, Norfolk, England.[1] He was the eldest child and only son of William Helsdon Larner and Kate Brown. He had one sister Alice. William was baptised at the Bodham Free Methodist Church on August 24, 1884 when he was 7 months old. The officiating minister was John Wesley North.

The Larners lived at Pine Farm, Bodham. When the Porter family moved into the school house the Larners became friendly with them and soon Willie and Amy Porter were meeting most days and going out for walks together. Sometimes Willie went to tea with them and on Sundays they often went to church together. [2] On September 14, 1910 Willie married Amy at Bodham Anglican Church[3] and they held their reception at the school. Willie was apprenticed as a carpenter and joiner at Lawrence and Scotts in Norwich. After their marriage the couple set up home in a rented terraced house at 47 Lincoln Street where they continued to live for the duration of their marriage. They had 6 children.

One of them, Margery, the twin of Dorothy, died as an infant, the only boy later followed in his father's footsteps and became a carpenter. Willie often had to work away from home on contracts. He was foreman at the rebuilding of the cricket pavillion at Edgebaston, Birmingham and at the reconstruction of Mumbles Pier on the Gower Coast, among other assignments. While still a young man Willie suffered heart problems and he died at the age of 59 on April 20, 1943.[4] His widow Amy, was very proud of the fact that he still had 'all his own teeth' when he died! He was buried in Eaton Cemetery in Norwich, Norfolk, England.
