Bård was born about 1653 (aged 13 in 1666) or 1650 (aged 67 in 1717).
Bård was enumerated aged 13 with his father, brothers, and other residents in 1666 at Melby.[1]
A court case between the Biri sognprest Mads and Corporal Baar Melbye took place on 12 September 1677. In that case the ødegaard Birche as well as 'his mother's farm Melbye' were mentioned (Lars had died by 1677, and Agnethe was listed in the tax records).[2]
Bård may not have been married before Marrying Margrete. Janichen may have been his stepdaughter instead.[Research Notes]
He married the widow Margrete Pedersdatter Skramstad by 1680, when he replaced Jens Skramstad in the landskatt.[3]
A case involving Skramstad and Helgestad was heard on 23 September 1681,[4] and again on 4 November 1681.[5] Bård was expectedly mentioned several times in it.
Bård is mentioned in the 26 Februray 1691 probate of Peder Larsen Bratberg in Biri.[6]
Margrete died in early 1708, and on 11 October 1708 he married Eli Jørgensdatter Rise. The witnesses were her brother Even Fjørsingstad, and her brother-in-law Ole Gundersen Skiefstad who was also the (former) brother-in-law of Margrete.[7]
In the 1717 Legdsruller, Baar Larssen Schramstad is listed as aged 67. Apart from husmann and farmhands, his foster son Ole Povelssen, a soldat under Lettelman, is listed aged 26.[8]
Bård Skramstad is last mentioned in the Toten churchbooks on 2 Februray 1722, as a fadder to Lars Moldbache's son Jacob. Presumably this was the same Bård.[9]
Lauritz Melby had a son named Baard on the 1666 census. The Biri bygdebok (published 1954) does not mentioned Bård at Melby. The Toten bygdebok (1984) does. Considering the census, the 1677 court case (the ødegaard Birche - where Ole Larsen was farmer in 1691 - and Melby mention) and that Bård Skramstad was involved in Peder Larsen (Melby) Bratberg's probate, it seems likely that Bård Skramstad is identical with Bård Melby.
The Toten bygdebok states that "Janniken Bårdsdatter, f. ca 1677 d. Skramstad 1696, må være en datter av Bård fra et tidligere ekteskap".
The only records of a Janichen at Skramstad in Toten are:
It doesn't look like the patronymic Bårdsdatter is used in the primary records, and that the bygdebok inferred it from the burial record. It looks instead that Janichen was Bårds stepdaughter, and that she was born (possibly postumously and named after her father) to Jens and Margrete .
