Biography

Anna Lena was born 4 April 1861 in Långaryd parish. Her parents were Nils Cornelius Larsson and his wife Anna Lisa Svensdotter. They are noted as "på socknen", i.e. belonging to the parish but having no fixed abode.[1] It is unknown whether she had any siblings.

By the logic of the patronymic system still used in Sweden as she left home and was married, her name was Nilsdotter, because she was a daughter of Nils. Later, by the different logic of surnames used in America, her maiden name was assumed to be Larsson, like her father's last name. She would not have been using her husband's last name in Sweden, but of course did so in America.

Anna Lena was married in Sweden to Charles Magnuson, possibly about 1883. Charles was born in the month of August in 1858 in Sweden. They had eight children, the first five in Sweden;

  1. Axel Leonard (1885-1958)
  2. Johan Emil (1887-1962)
  3. Oscar Sigford (1889-1950)
  4. Carl Arthur (1891-1966)
  5. John Edward (1893-??)

1887 to 1889 Karl Johan Magnusson and his wife Anna Lena Nilsdotter lived in the croft Petersburg in the grounds of Boarp Hallagård, Långaryd parish, with their four sons.[2]

Charles immigrated from Sweden to Minnesota in about December of 1892. Their son, John Edward was born in Sweden in September of 1893, so Charles left for America before that date, according to the 1895 Minnesota state census. Lena and their five boys arrived on 25 October 1898 on the ship Aragonia at the port of Philadelphia.[3]

  1. Esther (1900-??)
  2. Ruth Cecelia Miley (1902-989)

Residence in 1900 was in Clinton village, Bigstone township, Big Stone County, Ortonville.[4] Charles supported his family as a stone mason.

Residence in 1905 was in Big Stone township, Big Stone County, Ortonville.[5] Anna 44 was at home with Johan E 18, Carl A 14, John E 11, Astri L 5, Ruth C 3 and Otelia C 10 months. Her sons, Axel L 20 and Oscar 16 were farm laborers and her husband, Charles 47 was a farmer.

Residence in 1910 was in Ortonville (city) Ward 2, Big Stone County, Ortonville.[6]

Residence in 1920 was in Ortonville (city) Ward 2, Big Stone County, Ortonville.[7] Anna L 58 was at home with her daughters, Astre L 20 and Tillie C 15, Her sons, Axel L 34, was a general laborer and Oscar S 30 was a concrete laborer. Her daughter, Ruth C 18 was working as a servant outside the home. Her husband, Charles J 61 was a house mason.

Anna Lena died in Ortonville on 24 December 1926.[8] Her body was buried in the Mound Cemetery in Ortonville.[9] [10]
