Biography

Cary Latham, the son of Nicholas Latham and Elizabeth (Newman) Latham, was baptized in Aldenham, Hertfordshire, England on November 10, 1613.[1][2][3] According to the (frequently unreliable) Millennium File, he was born in Aldenham on May 30, 1612.[4] A significant number of family trees, also list Elstow, Bedfordshre as a possible alternative place of birth, but without providing a source.

Sometime prior to 1639,[5] Cary emigrated to New England and married Elizabeth (Masters) Lockwood, the daughter John Masters and the widow of Edward Lockwood.[6][2][7]

Cary and Elizabeth initially settled in Cambridge or Boston, Massachusetts. In 1645, he moved moved to New London, Connecticut Colony, where he was one of the original settlers of the New London plantation.[8]

Cary and Elizabeth had the following children:

  • Thomas, b. in Cambridge/Boston in "the 9th month of 1639"[9][6] (which converts to November 1639),[10] m. October 15, 1673 Rebecca Wells,[6] d. December 14, 1677[6]
  • Joseph, b. in Cambridge/Boston on "the 2d of the 12th month of 1642"[9][6] (which converts to February 2, 1643)[10]
  • John, d. 1684 in New London[6]
  • Elizabeth, m. John Leeds[6]
  • Jane, m. Hugh Hubbard[6]
  • Lydia, m. John Packer[6]
  • Hannah[6]

In 1654, Cary was awarded the lease and monopoly for the ferry over the Pequot River, and as lessee of that ferry, was the first to reside on the other side of the river in the area that became Groton, Connecticut.[2]

Cary served in various New London town offices, including as townsmen or selectmen for 16 years, and deputy to the General Court from 1664 to 1670.[6][2]

Cary Latham died in 1685.[6][2] According to a letter by his granddaughter Prudence Latham Adams, he died from drowning in the Connecticut River.[11]
