Alice was born about 1879[1].
She came to New Zealand in 1883, on the ship Doric, with her mother, father, and three siblings. [2]
While that immigration record only shows "Alice Latham", an Auckland Star article refers to her as "Alice E Latham".[3]
The Doric's much-awaited arrival was marred by the raising of the "dreaded yellow flag", indicating disease on board. Seven children were ill with measles, including one of the Lathams, and the child and their father were among those landed at Motuihi quarantine station.[4]
Her grand-daughter Irene confirms that the family moved to Herekino, and struggled to make a living there.
It is likely they moved there as part of the Herekino Village Special Settlement[5], but it is still to be determined if they were in the first group in January 1887[6], the second group who travelled by the steamer S.S. Argyle in late February 1887[7], or at another time.
By March 1887, a Member of the House of Representatives, Mr R. Hobbs, reported that some settlers were in danger of starvation, due to "the Government not fulfilling the promises made. Some are in want of food, and have not tasted meat for weeks, and many will certainly starve if immediate relief is not forthcoming."[8]
In April 1887, The Hon. Lanarch, "promised to make enquiries as to what measures can be adopted to render Harbour of Herekino navigable for traffic of settlers."[9]
Ballance visit
In May 1887, the first child was born in the settlement was a boy, who was christened "John Ballance Sherrin" in honour of the Minister of Lands.[10][11]
