Biography

Joseph Lothrop immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Joseph Lothrop was born 1624 and baptized April 11, 1624 in Eastwell, Kent, England. He is the son of Rev John Lothrop and Hannah House. His mother died while his father was in jail for non-conformist preaching. Joseph, about ten years old by then, arrived 18 Sept 1634 at Boston, Massachusetts with his father and siblings, according to the Journal kept by Governor Winthrop. The family soon removed to Scituate, Massachusetts. Joseph married Mary Ansell December 11, 1650 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. [1]

CAPT. JOSEPH LATHROP.— (1624-1702.) A Deputy from Barnstable in 1667 and for eleven consecutive years following; a conspicuous member of the "Council of War" in 1676; mem- ber of the Barnstable Military Company in 1643, and later Lieutenant and Captain. Mentioned to the Governor for conspicuous services in the Indian Wars.

Will

Joseph Lothrop of Barnstable made his will on October 19, 1700. In his will, he made bequests to his sons Samuel, Barnabas, Hope and Thomas and daughters Mary Denis and daughter Elizabeth Fuller. He appointed his sons Samuel, Hope and Thomas as his executors. The will was witnessed by Barnabas Lothrop, John Lothrop, Abigail Lothrop and Thankful Hodge. It was proved in Barnstable on April 9, 1702.[2]

Leigh Anne, I'm having trouble finding the reference to Jiseph being a Quaker. You cite page 5, but I find nothing on that page about Joseph being a Quaker.

Hello PM's: Just a note of religious interest: There was evidence of Lt. John Howland Jr.'s leanings towards the Quakers; he was opposed to the intolerant party of which Geo. Barlow of Sandwich was the leading man. Howland's wife joined the church 22 Nov 1691. Howland and two other aged men, Joseph Lothrop and James Lewis, joined the church on the 18 Jun 1699.
