Biography

Wilton A. Lathrop was born in 1869 (Prob. in Afton, Cherokee, Iowa). He was the son of Warren Lathrop and Forest Armour. From the inscription on his grave marker : "Wilton Arthur Lathrop" U.S.N. 1869-1894 died in WuHu, China."

Cherokee Democrat, February 20, 1895 "The services held at the M.E. Church Sunday afternoon in memory of Walton Lathrop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Lathrop of this city,, were quite largely attended. Co. M.I.N.G., attended in a body in full uniform and added to the impressiveness of the occasion. Mr. Lathrop died at Kohn, China. Three years ago he enlisted in the United States Navy and was with the United States Steamship, Concord, of the Chinese squadron, at the time of his death."

  • "Additional information provided by Peggy Liekweg: His name was actually Wilton Arthur Lathrop. He died of typhoid fever was buried in Wuhu, China. By Petition of the government, he was exhumed and reburied in Cherokee, Oak Hill Cemetery with his family. Wilton was born in 1869 to Warren D. and Forest Rosa Armour Lathrop."
