Biography

Louis was born in 1848. He passed away in 1924.

Louis LATZER was known as the father of PET EVAPORATED MILK. Founding director of the Helvetia Condensed Milk Company in Highland, Illinois. He took over the company as President in 1887, two years after its start, and turned it around following a problem with milk spoilage. Canned evaporated milk was a great idea at a time with little refrigeration and in areas without ready milk supplies. The company received a tremendous boost during the Spanish-American War when the US government purchased canned evaporated milk for its troops. By 1921, Louis's son John had taken over the company, running it from its new headquarters in St. Louis. The company was renamed the Pet Milk Company in 1923, and later, Pet, Incorporated.
