Biography

Johann Michael Lau, Jr. was born February 24, 1771.[1] He was christened March 7, 1771, at Wolf's Church in West Manchester Township, York, Pennsylvania. [2]

He was a resident of West Manchester Township. He and his wife, Margaret Eyster, were the parents of the following children:[3]

  1. John
  2. Rebecca, wife of Samuel Bowman;
  3. Michael, 3rd
  4. George,
  5. Jonas,
  6. Jacob
  7. Susanna, wife of Solomon Weigel;
  8. Elizabeth, wife of John Sleder;
  9. Joshua
  10. Anna Maria, wife of William Lau.

Michael Lau is also noted in the Assessment of 1800, West Manchester Twp, York Co. PA. He is listed amongst the prominent “distillers” of the township, along with Martin Ebert, Welrick Bentz, George Eyster,Mathias Smyser, Adam Wolf, and George Philip Ziegler, Esq. This record also asserts that “much of the grain then raised in the township was manufactured into spirits, and sold in Baltimore.”[4]

He died 16 Jan 1839[5] and was buried at Wolf's Church in West Manchester Township, York, Pennsylvania.[1][6] A new stone gives his birth as August 8, 1770.[7] This new stone is at variance with previously establish dates for John Michael, especially the baptismal records of Wolf’s St Paul’s Church.[2]
