It seems certain that Francis was illegitimate, probably to his mother. He married in 1784. So he must have been about 19 or 20 at this point which would give an approximate year of birth as 1764-5. This is well before any of Dr Lauder's four marriages. Dr Lauder would only be 14 or 15 when Francis was born.
As "Francis, son of Colin Lauder, surgeon, Edinburgh, was served co-heir of Provision-General to his maternal grandfather, John Milne, founder in Edinburgh, on 14th February 1792"[1] we must assume that he is definitely a child of his mother and that Dr.Lauder took him in when he married her. It might also explain why we cannot locate Francis's baptism.
He died on 10 May 1803, St Cuthberts parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian. {given in the OPR as son of Dr Colin Lauder surgeon Edin}[2]
