Biography

Elizabeth Sarah Lauderdale was born abt 1730 in Augusta, Virginia, dau of James Maitland Lauderdale (See source on father's profile verifying a James Lauderdale was in Augusta, VIrginia at least by the year 1760.) She died 1805 in Davidson County, Tennessee, Non-Cemetery Burial [no mother listed][1][2]
She married Lewis Green abt 1748 in VA [3]
She appeared in the records of Washington County, Virginia in 1797 as “old and infirm” and gave power of attorney to “my son-in-law Moses Foley.” When she died intestate about 1805, the appraisal of her estate was presented to the court by Zachariah Green.

Disputed Facts

Lauderdale's are descended from James Maitland Lauderdale, the Emigrant, who settled in Pennsylvania around 1714. He is thought to have moved from southwest Scotland, where the Lauderdale name is known in the 18th century, to Northern Ireland and thence to North America. [4]
Lauderdale as a family name, not connected with the title, first appears in the Scottish parish records in Galloway in the early 18th century with the birth of Jean Lauderdale in 1737, the daughter of James Lauderdale at Beith, Ayr. Maitlands have lived in or been connected with Galloway since 1360, and our understanding of James the Emigrant is that he came from that part of Scotland, so the combination of geography, name and his family tradition makes it almost certain that he was a Maitland by origin, and as such, related by blood to the Earls of Lauderdale, but not descended from them.
We don't know from whom James Lauderdale, the Emigrant was descended, and he made no claims to be descended from the Earls of Lauderdale. Equally, he was firm in his assertion that he was a Maitland by origin, and this is the tradition which he handed down to his children and grandchildren and which was formally recorded by James Shelby Lauderdale in 1880. This refers to a meeting between his uncle Sam, and Dr. David Lauderdale who met in 1830, and discovered that they shared a common family tradition. Another Lauderdale from New York was met in 1880 in St Louis with a similar tale.

Of Note: 15 February 1794 Sumner County, Tennessee "page 462 I, James McKain of Sumner County sold unto Zachariah Green of same place, sold for one hundred and thirty two pounds in hand paid for value received for one negro wench named (illegible) and a horse and cattle, calves, featherbeds and furniture and a rifle gun. This 25 Jul 1793. James Lauderdale, J. Kain, James McKain Reg: 15 February 1794."[5]

Since I am probably the furtherest removed genealogically from Elizabeth Sarah, I have removed myself as a Project Manager (PM). In my judgement, the most effective profile management can be achieved by 2 or 3 PMs who have the closest genealogical relationship with the subject profile. A fond adieu to all.

So, I think we all agree that leaving the profile the way it stands is the best approach until we find a definitive source. I am going to add a template about unverified parents and I will remove my warning message.

Sonja & Robin, I also have James as the father with two sources: (1) Find A Grave & (2) Edmund West, comp.. Family Data Collection - Births [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA. Unfortunately these secondary sources do not provide "proof" or even "Probable" evidence. In cases such as this I tend to use my "gut judgement" profiile & add a caveated source such as that cited by compilers of above Source (2) data base; namely: "When you find the name of an ancestor listed, confirm the facts in original sources". Robin,

I have been searching for some proof of her father being either James or his son William and have found both. Unless we can find a will for William or James where they list their children we seem to be at an brick wall right now.

I need to know from the profile managers if anyone has data, not an unsourced tree or Find a grave, that proves she was the daughter of James. In researching William, the son of James, I believe she is his daughter, so James was her grandfather. I have sent notes to the Find a Grave memorial creators and some other tree owners on the web with the same question. Let me know what you think.
