Biography

James Lavallin was born about 1630 in Walterstown, County Cork, Ireland. He was the son and heir of Patrick Lavallin and Anstace Terry.

James married Ellen MacCarthy, the sister of Charles MacCarthy, an "ancient and native inhabitant".

James and Ellen had issue:

  1. Patrick Lavallin m Ellinor Goold
  2. Richard Lavallin insane
  3. James Lavallin
  4. Peter Lavallin
  5. Melchior Lavallin
  6. Matthew Lavallin
  7. Catherine Lavallin m Edward Roche
  8. Anne Lavallin m Patrick Stanton
  9. Joanna Lavallin m John Coggan
  10. Mary Lavallin
  11. Anastasia Lavallin m James Lombard

On 22 February 1679, James disinherited his eldest son Patrick by deed. There is debate as to why this occurred: it was either because he found Patrick "offensive" and worried that he would squander the estate, or that he did it to protect the family estate from Cromwell. He later added a codicil to his will leaving Patrick some money.

James Lavallin made his will on 9 June 1681 in Walterstown.

Research Notes

Sources disagree on the number of daughters he had, their names and their husbands. John Waters/ Walters appears to be the husband of his sister, not his daughter Mary.
