James is a mystery. The earliest appearance of his is with Sarah Sutton, marrying in the Richmond Registry Office around 1878
What I can confirm is that he had two brothers, which were named in his Obit and that he was a well-known resident.
I've found no information regarding James' parents, he notes himself as 'illegitimate' with no other clarification.
JAMES LAVENDER, a well-known and highly respected resident of North Richmond, passed away on the 24th ultimo at the ripe age of 76 years. Deceased had been in indifferent health for some years, and died at the residence of his son, Mr. V. J. Lavender, of Tennyson. He leaves a widow and a large family. Mr. H. Lavender (Clarendon) and Mr. G. Lavender (Tennyson) are brothers. [1]
